Beware what you learn on social media, as some aspects need to be handled only by experts. As in a bizzare incident, a 28-year-old pregnant woman who was learning lessons on YouTube about child delivery lost her life.

A lot of youth and other people have been observed getting cooking lessons, dance lessons; etc on YouTube but this incident from Tamil Nadu that has come up on Thursday will shake you from head to toes. Krithiga, a 28-year old resident of Tirupur area in Tamil Nadu was watching videos on how to deliver a baby at home which caused her death. She was guided by her husband during the same.

Krithiga and her husband did not believe in modern medical practices adopted by the doctors in hospitals. So, they decided to carry out the whole process at their residence. According to the reports, the placenta did not come out during the delivery, and the deceased died due to excessive bleeding while giving birth to the baby.

The woman who was a school teacher, died immediately after bringing the child into this world. Her husband is an employer at a knitwear agency. The deceased and her husband are residents of Rathnagiriswarar Nagar near Pudupalayam in Tamil Nadu. Reportedly, the couple already having a 3-year old girl watched a YouTube video on ‘How to Help Pregnant women’.

According to sources, the couple was provoked by their friends Praveen and wife Lavanya to practice delivery at home. Krithiga’s pregnancy was allegedly not registered with the Urban Primary healthcare Centre.

While on a conversation with a Pune based gynecologist Dr. Asmita Potdar, she said “It is a case of complete negligence by the couple. The complication of placenta not been able to come out is very common and that is why we are there, that is why all the doctors are there, after years of experiments and study, we acquire the right to do a surgery. Delivery should strictly take place under the guidance of an expert. And what I strongly believe that our country is again going back to the 18th century.”

After this incident, now the state of TN is planning to make it mandatory for all the pregnant women to register with Health Department to avoid complications during pregnancy and the birth of the child happens safely. Those who don’t register will not get a birth certificate for the child in future.

A complaint has been filed by Krithiga’s father Rajendran, who said that the woman was rushed to the hospital immediately, but in vain, as the doctors examined her and announced that she had passed away.

Next time, be careful when you decide to trust a social media blindly for such delicate cases. A doctors’ prime responsibility is to save the patient’s life before anything. Knowing the fact, what is causing disbelief on the doctors? Is it the illiteracy still existing among the citizens which is causing this or is it the fault of the doctors? The cause of the issue is to be examined from the roots.

The pregnant women, who are about to give birth to a new life should be very cautious before taking any such step without giving a thought. Let’s take a look at some of the Do’s and Don’ts which a woman must follow during her pregnancy:

What all should a woman do:

  • Give a healthy touch to your taste buds: Include all the multivitamin containing food. Calcium containing food such as eggs, milk in proper quantity so that the fetus gets the required nutrition and leads to a healthy development.
  •  Sweat more to relax stress: Mood swings are the common problems during pregnancy, to avoid this; a woman should concentrate more on exercises, practicing yoga, meditations to keep herself calm.
  •  Prefer doctors: Don’t be a therapist yourself. Referring a doctor always helps and will be safer to opt for regular check-ups with doctors and getting proper medication and care.

What all should a woman not do:

  • Say no to smoking, alcohol and drugs: Do not smoke during the period of pregnancy. Since genes are transferred, the child you give birth to, may acquire the same genes and get addicted to smoking too. The child may also exhibit some of the abnormal qualities in him in the future.
  •  Never slip on sleep: Make sure you have adequate amount of sleep regularly. The child needs the same amount of sleep as the mother.
  •  Don’t eat extra: Eat light and carve out excess amount of calories in your body which may control the amount of fat depositing on your body and help prevent complications during pregnancy.
