Kasba Peth bypoll impact: MVA unitedly seeks restoration of 40 per cent rebate in property tax and BJP delegation meets CM and deputy CM to discuss the issue

Pune : NpNews24 Online  –Pune PMC Property Tax | The issue of 40 per cent rebate in the property tax of Puneites raised by Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray in the campaigning for the Kasba Peth bypoll has come to the fore after the result has been declared. After winning the election, the newly elected MLA Ravindra Dhangekar had met the municipal commissioner and demanded that the 40 per cent rebate in the property tax should be restored and houses measuring up to 500 sq feet should be spared from paying property tax. He had declared that he would make the same demands in the assembly. Meanwhile, today, MVA MLAs Sunil Tingre and Chetan Tupe staged an agitation on the steps of the Legislative Assembly and demanded that the 40 per cent rebate in the property tax should be restored and Puneites should be spared of paying penalty tax. Meanwhile, when the agitation was underway, former mayor Murlidhar Mohol, MLA Madhuri Misal, MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, MLA Siddharth Shirole and Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil met CM Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis and demanded that the 40 per cent rebate in thr property tax should be restored. Fadnavis assured the delegation that a meeting would be held next week to discuss the issue.

All major parties have given importance to main issues being faced by Puneites. From 1959, the PMC is providing 40 per cent relief in the property tax to properties being used by the owner. Meanwhile, in 2011-12, during an audit conducted of the state government’s finances, it was pointed out that the rebate is unnecessary and asked the PMC to levy full tax. In 2018-19, the then CM Fadnavis had taken a decision to cancel the rebate but it was decided that the dues would not be collected.

The PMC did away with the rebate from 2019-20 and issued the property tax bills. Since 2020-21 was a year of coronavirus pandemic, the PMC included the dues pending from 2019 in the 2022-23 bills. Hence, the average bill received by Puneites was three to four times more than the regular bill and this sent shivers down the spine of five lakh property owners. Since many complaints were being received, Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil and Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar had appealed to people in September not to pay the bills. However, no decision was taken during the last six months. Since the new year was starting from 2023-24, a letter was sent to the state government but no reply has been received.

The citizens who did not pay the bills after the appeal by Patil, would have to pay a two per cent fine per month from September along with the bill of 2023-24. The amount would be four to give times the average annual bill. The removal of 40 per cent rebate would affect 25 lakh Puneites. Hence, the MVA did not raise the issue during the bypoll but is focusing on it after the result has been announced and this has put the BJP on the back foot.
