High Court directs PMC to supply water by tankers to 23 merged villages

Pune :  NpNews24 Online  –  The Bombay High Court (HC) has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to supply tanker water to the 23 merged villages till a proper water supply system is set up in them.

The directive was issued during the hearing of a PIL filed by former corporator Dilip Vede Patil. Water issues in the merged villages have aggravated.

The State Government merged the 23 villages on the outskirts of Pune into the PMC in July 2021. The villages are facing water issues due to the growing population. Constructions were allowed in these villages by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). It has taken down in writing from the realtors concerned that it would be the latter’s responsibility to provide water to their customers. Only then they were issued completion certificates. After the merger of the villages, local residents started demanding water from the PMC. However, the civic body put the onus on the builders and said that water would be supplied to them after the laying of water pipelines is over. Meanwhile, residents have been forced to buy tanker water.

The petitioner sought relief for the residents of these villagers as they are suffering. The HC directed to remain present on May 4. Moreover, the HC bench comprising Justice Abhay Ahuja and Justice AA Syed directed that the PMC should provide water tankers to these villages till the water supply scheme is implemented. the state advocate general

Petitioner Vede Patil said, “The PMRDA is responsible for giving building permission and levying charges in the 23 merged villages. Basic civic amenities such as roads, water and electricity are given by the civic body. The PMC does not get any revenue from these villages. Therefore, the government should entrust only one body with the responsibilities of collecting revenue and providing basic amenities.”

When contacted Additional Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Binwade said, “We have received the HC directive in the PIL about the 23 merged villages. We will act further after taking all details of the order.”
