Facebook friend from overseas ‘gifts’ a fraud

There have been rising in cyber crimes with the advancement of technology. Most of the fraudsters use social networking sites to gain people’s trust, befriend them and fool them.

In one such case, a Nigerian citizen committed a fraud with the pretext of sending a gift he instead of sent foreign currency.

According to the reports the complainant is working in a private hotel in Pune. The Nigerian and the victim became friends one and half year ago on Facebook. With course of time the two started chatting on Facebook, after getting to know each other they even exchanged numbers and started talking on WhatsApp. While chatting on Facebook, the Nigerian spoke about sending a gift. The cheater even sent a picture of the gift on a WhatsApp chat.

After a few days, the complaint got a call from a person identified as Priya Sharma. Sharma informed that there is a courier in the complainant’s name. And since it carries foreign currently, therefore, Rs 1 Lakh 17 Thousand will have to be transferred. But even after transferring the money she did not receive the gift. This when she realized that she had been fooled by her friend from beyond the seven seas. This case is registered in the Wanwadi Police station, Hadapsar.

The police found 17 mobile phones, 7 sim cards, 6 debit cards, 4 passbooks and 1 checkbook have been confiscated from the Nigerian fraudster, he has been identified as Ets Sergey. And Sergey is currently under arrest of police officials of Wanwadi police station.

The case is been handled by police sub-inspector Manda Nevse, Kiran Avti, police inspector, Shirish Gavde, Yogesh Vaval, Atul Lokhande, and Joty Deewane under the guidance of  Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Sudhir Hiremath, Assistant commissioner of police Nilesh More, Police inspector Radhika Phadke.
