Electricity department of PMC imposes costs on contractors in the name of CSR

On this occasion, foreign visitors were welcomed by decorating street lamps in some parts of the city by painting and electric lights. However, it has been revealed that the electric lighting services were not received through CSR but the contractors of the sewage treatment plant of the Municipal Corporation were forced to provide these services. A meeting of representatives of various countries under G20 was held in Pune on January 16 and 17. The streets and footpaths of the city were spruced up to welcome the foreign visitors. Road walls, dividers, footpaths, flyover walls were also painted and glazed. The administration beautified over 54 major squares in the city on a BOT basis. On behalf of the Electricity Department of the Municipal Corporation, electric garlands resembling the Tricolor were decorated on the street lights of the city. Furthermore, the Electricity Department also installed artificial trees (Lumino trees) illuminated with colorful lights at 11 places along the route taken by the foreign visitors.
The concerned contractor started collecting these trees. When asked about who paid for these artificial trees taken by the Municipal Corporation on the occasion of the programme, conflicting answers were given by the officials of the electricity department. Chief Engineer Srinivas Kandul said these artificial trees were rented out for four days through CSR. Rs 5000 were spent for each day for one tree. When asked about the correspondence done for CSR, Kandul said that he would take details and provide.
When Abhijit Sathe, the Executive Engineer of the Electricity Department was contacted in this regard, he said that the contractors of the Sewage Treatment Plant of the Municipal Corporation have borne the cost of these trees.
Due to the conflicting details received from two officials of the same department, it has come to the fore that the electricity department has forced contractors to provide services in the name of CSR.
