Eco-friendly Ganpati 2018 brings Women Employment

Every creative person, who is fond of crafts and decoration, thermocol is their basic requirement! Especially, the occasions need thermocol the most. But, the ban in thermocol by the government has caused troubles such art lovers and decorators.

The main problem is faced by the Pune based workers decorating for Ganapati festival with great enthusiasm. But, they have somehow found their way out as wood and bamboo is replacing theromcol.

Pune based Burud Ali Samaj workers who work for various decoration projects using bamboo are being profited. They are making bamboo Makhars, a type of stage constructed in decoration made from bamboo is eco-friendly and are highly in demand. They have been making these for years. The Thermocol ban has given an opportunity for bamboo Makhars to expand in the market.

The women are being benefitted the most as; they are getting opportunities to step out of their homes and do something creative to earn a living, to showcase their art. The npnews24 correspondent had a conversation with various women who are into this, and they said:

Monali More(35), who is working in this business since childhood said, “ she has started making Makhar a month ago. Due to high demand, she is now making five to six Makhars in a day. Till the last year the whole samaj of Burud Ali used to sell less than 1000 Makhars in Ganpati festival but this year we have already sold more than 2,500 Makhars and we have to yet complete more than Ten Thousand orders of Makhars.”

Further, she added that “The craftswoman’s who used to make bamboo Makhar at homes are now coming out of shields on streets and making such Makhars due to increase in demand, which is a good thing.”

Janardhan More, president of Akhil Burud Samaj at Burud Ali, the oldest craftsmen in Samaj said, “Due to the ban of Thermocol Makhars, there is 70-80 percent hike in bamboo Makhars.”

He also added that “The bamboos they use to construct Makhar are of various types like Assam, Marga, Chivli, Dhopile, Mesi, and Kandali which comes from Konkan. We purchase them from wholesalers of the city. These Makhars are also available in foldable structures and it can be of any size, any shape or any design we make it according to the demand of the customer.

Trupti Sonawane(25) said, “The women of the samaj used to make bamboo Makhars at home to help their fathers, brothers or husbands. But, because of thermocol ban, the bamboo Makhars are highly in demand due to which women of samaj have started making and selling and showcasing the art on the roadside along with their male companion.”

These workers usually earn their livelihood during the Ganpati or Navratri festival the most. Till last year their earnings were not up to their expectations. But this year the samaj seems to be happy as their products and crafts work is sold in the market in large scale meeting their expectations.
