Environmental issues become more critical nowadays, we are still taking it very casually. The problems like uncertainty in nature, climate change, air, soil, sound, and water pollution increase tremendously and Kerala Flood incidence was the result of such activities. All these issues are manmade and arise due activities like deforestation.

Most of the projects did by the government only for the betterment of contractors, building dams on wrong places like very high and slope places, not considering environmental loses while doling such developmental projects, all these were the reasons of Kerala Floods. Constructing buildings, making roads and dams becomes the new definition of development. This is the manmade development and  Development without harming to Nature is real development, said by Dr. Mohan Gadgil. He was talking on the topic of  “Aaj Kerala, Udya Konkan?” (Today Kerala! Tomorrow Konkan?).  This program was organized by Vanrai’s  “Ek Mahina- Ek Vyakhyan” (One month- one lecture) environmentalist Mohan Gadgil.

Article 21 gives us the right to life, liberty, and security. This comes under the fundamental right given by Indian constitution and it has much wider meaning including the right to live with human dignity, right to good health, right to livelihood and right to pollution free air, water, and soil etc. Thus Indian constitution gives a provision to us to live pollution free life as well as it’s our responsibility to protect nature.

“Projects are going on against democracy and constitution of the country. These projects do not involve the common and local citizens,” said by the environmentalist Madhav Gadgil. He further said that many dams have been built in the state of Kerala. Most of them built on high places and on the vertical slope. The state government had been told to release water from the dam during the month of July. Then water was suddenly released from the dams of Pamba, Periyar and other areas when the situation became critical. As a result, floods occurred all over the state. Therefore, it is demanding from the citizens to study the old dam projects in the state and underline their need. Development programs should not be imposed on the common people by the government, otherwise, incidents like Kerala will be repeated.

There was the huge response for this program by people, even some people had no place to seat, they attended the program by seating directly on stage. Vanrai’s Ravindra Dharia was present on the occasion and the anchoring did by the editor of Vanrai Magazine Amit Wadekar.

Take the idea of Norway:  Norway has huge reservoirs of oil. It is controlled by the government and they withdraw only sufficient oil. Also, a pension fund has been given to the citizens as a benefit of these projects. In such a way, Norway has set down a good example in front of the whole world. Even though the laws in our country are good, but many companies violate these laws because we lack in its implementation. – said by Gadgil.
