Demand intensifies for fixing accountability behind Congress’ defeat

New Delhi : A committee of Congress constituted to review the reasons for the defeat in the assembly elections may recommend fixing accountability. For this, the state Congress organization and the state in-charge can be made accountable. So that, after a crushing defeat in the assembly elections, the State Congress Committee and the state in-charge can be removed and replaced with new ones.

Many leaders have raised such demands in discussions with the five-member committee set up to review the reasons for the defeat. A senior party leader said that after the defeat, no responsibility is fixed on the state Congress. After the defeat, the state Congress president himself offers his resignation, but many times the resignation is not accepted for years.

According to the party leader, many leaders are of the view that accountability should be enforced during discussions with the committee. According to him, the senior leaders and in-charge of the defeated state Congress should not be given any responsibility in the organization till a certain time. Till now it has been that after the defeat in the election, the responsibility of the state is handed over from the in-charge and is given the charge of another state. There is also no change in the senior functionaries of the State Congress Committee.

Many leaders have given opinion to the committee reviewing the defeat that after the defeat in the elections, senior officials and in-charge of the state Congress should not be given any responsibility till a certain time. This will help in curbing internal infighting in the state Congress, while the in-charge will also carry out his work with more responsibility. According to a party leader, the five-member committee set up to review the defeat will take time to complete its work. Therefore, Congress President Sonia Gandhi may extend the tenure of the committee.
