Bhima Kale who was seriously injured after being severely thrashed in the lock up, died in the civil hospital while undergoing treatment. The Pune CID which clarified that Kale had died due to the injuries he suffered after being beaten up by the police, has registered an FIR against Senior PI of Bijapur Naka police station Uday Singh Patil, API Shitalkumar Kolhal, policemen Shrirang Khandekar, Shivanand Bhimde, Ambadas Gaddam, Laxman Rathod and Atish Patil. This has created a flutter in the police department as action has been taken against senior PI and six others.

The police found a two-wheeler of Bhima Kale, a resident of Pardhi Vasti in Kurduwadi in Madha taluka, in the limits of Bijapaur Naka police station. A robbery had taken place at the same spot. The police, who suspected that Kale had committed the robbery, produced him in the court from the district jail. The court remanded Kale in police custody for three days to help the police to probe the case. On September 22, at 8 pm, he was produced before Senior PI Patil. Kale was limping at that time and had bruise marks on his legs.

API Shitalkumar Kolhal and policemen Shrirang Khandekar, Shivanand Bhimde, Ambadas Gaddam, Laxman Rathod and Atish Patil severely beat up the accused to force him to admit to committing the crime. At that time, Senior PI Uday Singh Patil did not properly guide the investigating officer and the policemen, says a complaint filed by the CID.

As per the court guidelines, CCTVs should have been installed in the accused’s room and all other rooms. However, this was not done and the accused was neglected when he needed timely medical treatment. The accused was sick and mentally unfit and no one paid attention to him. Bhima Kale was admitted to the civil hospital on September 24 and he died on October 3 during treatment. After his death, Kale’s wife and other relatives blamed the police for his death.

After Kale’s death, his relatives staged a demonstration outside the collectorate. Since the accused had died during police custody, the case was handed over to the CID. After a probe carried out by the CID, an FIR was filed against senior PI Uday Singh Patil and six others. Pune Deputy Superintendent Gautam Dighavkar is investigating the case.

API Shitalkumar Kolhal is at present under suspension for misplacing the CCTV DVR during a police action at the Orchestra Bar on Bijapur Road. He is being probed in the case and he was not called for duty in the last month by Solapur CP Harish Baijal. Now, because of this incident, the problems of Kolhal have increased.

The accused Bhima Kale had been remanded in three-day police custody by the court. Since he was suffering from fever, cold, cough and vomiting, on the last day of his custody, he was admitted to the civil hospital for treatment. However, before that Kale was limping. However, Senior PI Patil did not give proper instructions to the investigating officers, the CID complaint says. The accused Kale should have been admitted to the hospital on the first day of his police custody. However, he was admitted to the hospital after four days, the complaint says.
