A tree’s death funeral was planned to raise voice against this. Many environmental lovers of Pimpri Chinchwad joined this funeral. Vrikshamitra, Bhugol Foundation, Angholichi Goli, Gandharva Nagri Vrikshamitra, Devrai Foundation, Savarkar Mandal, PCCF, Environmental Department of Nature- Swami Samarth Kendra and other well-known organizations.

The end of a symbolic slaughtered tree was taken out and it was buried and was wrapped in the tree flag as the last honours. And after the tribute to that tree, a message and the oath was taken that unauthorized tree cutting would not be tolerated. After that, a tamarind tree was planted chanting the Gayatri Mantra in background.

In addition to this agitation, as the nature lovers said that the protest will be carried out to the administrative level and a statement will be given to the Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad and the Superintendent of Horticulture Department and the supervisor of the garden department.

Some of the demands of these organisations are as follows:

  •  Implementation of the provisions of the law prohibiting unauthorized tree cutting.
  • the closure of the contractors for closure of authorized trees and pruning should be done by the municipal system.
  • closing the contract for the authorized tree plantation and pruning, authorized nature lover’s division should be appointed so that unauthorized tree cutting will be observed.
  • trees should be numbered and counted so that it can be recorded in numbers.
  •  if nothing works, then the citizens should get discounts from non-renewable tree tax.

The founder of social activity groups, Prashant Raul says, “our organisations have been working against unauthorised tree cuttings. We have approached commissioners, garden departments, many NGOs but nothing is happening in this regard.”

People around us are cutting trees by giving foolish reasons like it (trees) creates garbage, it will hide the elevation of bungalow, and it will create dark giving shadow to their windows. This organisation is raising the issue against this mentality.

Even to trim some trunk of tree, the permission is required to get from the Garden department. People cut the tree from the bottom after getting permission to trim few branches.

As further added by Prashant Raul, “Government is concentrating on tree plantation only but what about the conservation? They are putting all the efforts, money and all the muscle power for the tree plantation, but what after that? Nobody cares about tree conservation.”

If anyone claims that they are harvesting one or two trees than they are cutting and if we go by that ratio, one 15 year old fully developed tree will be equal to 1500 new trees. It should be compared under the account of oxygen they are emitting and carbon they are reducing. Thus, cutting one tree and planting three trees are not a logical answer.

“According to a google research, tree conservation rate is around 75%,” said Prashant Raul.

Everybody now a days posts their selfie and video of tree plantation but what about conservation? Tree is like our baby, same way the baby needs attention for which we do vaccination, we give quality food, all proteins, and nutrition for at least 5 to 6 years. The same way a tree needs time to grow. One needs to take care of a tree minimum for two years and then they will give benefit for their whole life. If one takes care of a tree for two years then they takes care of them for the whole life. Trees are ready to give but people are not ready to accept.

Government officers, agencies and departments are getting salaries for the tree conservation but they are not performing. In fact, these social workers who call themselves “Vruksh-Mitra” are spending money, time and efforts for growing and maintaining these trees.

People have lost sensation, they are not knowing what they are doing. People are taking the issue so casually.
