The court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Pune, on Thursday remanded 15 accused arrested for violence in Chakan during Maratha reservation agitation, to police custody till August 9. Three minor boys have been detained.

The accused were produced amid heavy police bandobast around 4 pm at district court premises in Shivajinagar.

When CJM asked if they have anything to say, most of them complained against police.

“We were nabbed around 1 am but not given food till now”, complained one of the accused.

“I was detained on Wednesday under pretext that I will be let off after enquiry but I was arrested”, said another arrested youth.

Most of them complained that they were told about video clip of their involvement, but not shown to them.

A battery of lawyers from Pune Bar Association (PBA) represented them as PBA had earlier taken stand that they will fight cases free of cost. The defence lawyers argued that most of them are students and not involved in the incident. Some of them have their own business , they have been falsely implicated in the case, argued adv Milind Pawar.

He further argued, “The youths have nabbed for being associated NCP, ie opposition party. They are local residents while IG rank officer publicly said that those involved in violence were from outside.”

Police have registered case against 4,000 to 5,000 unidentified persons for rioting and violence. The mob had set on fire 20 vehicles and damaged 70 vehicles, besides pelting stones on police personnel and Chakan police station. They had also blocked Pune Nashik highway.
