Abu Dhabi, Aug 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday swiped his RuPay card to purchase one kg of laddoos at the Emirates Palace – formally launching the Indian indigenous equivalent of Mastercard or Visa in the UAE.

The United Arab Emirates is the first country in the Middle East where the RuPay card has been launched. Twelve major business outlets in the UAE will start accepting the RuPay card starting next week, Indian Ambassador Navdeep Singh Suri announced during the launch.

Modi used his RuPay card for purchasing laddoos at a mock Chhappan Bhog Abu Dhabi outlet set up during the launch. “He bought one kilo of motichur laddoos by using the card,” Vinay Verma, owner and managing director of Chhappan Bhog, told the Khaleej Times.

“It is great pleasure and honour for us to be part of this ambitious launch. He is going to take it (the laddoos) to Bahrain as prasad for the temple. He said he is very keen that we will be using the RuPay card,” said Verma.

Suri said three banks in the UAE – Emirates NBD, Bank of Baroda and FAB – will start issuing the card from next week. The business community welcomed this step and stated that the initiative will go a long way in bringing India and UAE businesses together.

The UAE receives close to three million Indian tourists annually. Acceptance of the RuPay card in the UAE will lower the charges as tourists will save on the exchange rate. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) in association with Mercury Payments Services – UAE’s Domestic Scheme – has made RuPay cards acceptable at 175,000 merchant acceptance locations and 5,000 ATM and cash access locations within the UAE.

The NPCI, which manages the RuPay card network in the country, issues RuPay Global cards that run on the Discover Network when used outside India. The acceptance of RuPay Global cards with the partnership of Discover has reached over 44 million plus merchants & 2 million ATM and cash access locations, across 190 countries and is constantly growing, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Adeeb Ahamed, Managing Director, LuLu Financial Group, said low transaction processing fee makes RuPay more economically feasible for banks, merchants as well as consumers and can be easily leveraged by business to reach out to a larger segment of the society.

“Indian tourists, who are one of the largest numbers to come to UAE will be able to utilize the RuPay cards here as well, as more strategic partnerships will make it more viable. We believe that through the building of a larger ecosystem, RuPay can position itself as a reliable, premium brand in the payment cards space,” Ahamed added.

Abu Dhabi, Aug 24 (IANS) India-UAE bilateral ties have blossomed in the past four years as never before, largely due to the “excellent rapport” that the leadership of the two countries share, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, adding that he and Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan “regard each other as brothers”.

Prime Minister Modi is on a two day visit to Abu Dhabi, where he received the nation’s highest civilian honour, the Order of Zayed, on Saturday. During the visit, Modi also gave two separate interviews to the Khaleej Times and to WAM news agency.

Modi said strengthening the close bilateral relationship had been “one of the most important foreign policy priorities” of his government. “I am happy that the leadership of the UAE attaches similar importance to relations with India… For this relationship, even the sky is not the limit,” he told Khaleej Times.

He also said that being conferred the Order of Zayed was a “testimony to our growing partnership” and “an honour for the entire Indian nation of 1.3 billion people”.
Asked if the personal connect with the UAE leadership had helped the relationship prosper, he said: “The Crown Prince and I regard each other as brothers. We have developed enormous goodwill and mutual respect. I believe that the excellent rapport between the two of us is an important driving force in realising the true potential of our relationship.

“As a result, India-UAE bilateral relations have grown in the last four years as never before. The excellent cooperation we receive from the leadership, has enabled us to transform the relationship not only in energy and people-to-people contact, but in trade, investments, defence, food and security cooperation.”
On cooperation in fighting terror and revocation of Article 370, he told Khaleej Times: “India has been a victim of cross-border terrorism for over four decades. Both India and the UAE have a common interest in ensuring that the anti-humanity forces that shelter or promote terrorism in any way are compelled to give up their destructive policies. The UAE has shown full understanding of the strong steps we have taken against terrorism. We have exemplary cooperation to ensure mutual security.

“As far as Article 370 is concerned, our internal steps were taken in a completely democratic, open, transparent and constitutional manner. They were designed to end the isolation that had kept Jammu & Kashmir underdeveloped to serve the vested interests of a few. This isolation also allowed some of the youth to be misguided, get radicalised and take to violence and terrorism. We cannot afford to let these tendencies get any foothold in our harmonious society and distract us from the primary tasks of growth and development of the entire country. I appreciate the understanding the UAE and its leadership have shown for our steps and our reasons for taking them.”

trade and investments, he said the UAE’s “commitment to invest $75 billion in India is a game changer. There has been a significant increase in flow of investments from the UAE during the last few years in areas ranging from ports, infrastructure and housing. But ours is not a relationship dominated by statistics. It is a strategic partnership based on shared vision and objectives.”

“The vision for the next five years is to have investment-led growth. We are targeting around $1.5 trillion worth of investments in the coming five years. To achieve this vision, the government is working on policies to promote inflows from domestic as well as foreign sources.”

“We have set our sights on becoming a $5 trillion economy in the next five years. The UAE is diversifying its economy, going beyond its traditional sectors of strength. Together, we have the vision and roadmap as well as size, momentum and resources to achieve prosperity. It is a win-win for both, and also for the world. Our economies can complement each other using growing synergies and the presence of millions of Indians in the UAE,” he said.

In his interview to WAM, the PM said he believes that his third visit to the UAE, in the last four years, reflects the desire and will of the two countries to sustain the momentum achieved in the bilateral relationship.

“In this visit, I look forward to further strengthening our all-round cooperation. I also look forward to holding discussions with my brother His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed. I greatly admire his vision. I always find exchange of views with him stimulating and energising,” he explained.
“We have a number of important matters to discuss regarding bilateral relations as well as the regional and global situation. I am confident that my visit will serve to further strengthen our robust and vibrant relations,” Modi said.

“I am very upbeat about the trajectory of our relations and for opening up new areas of cooperation. I think there exist huge potential to make this cooperation a win-win (partnership) for both countries,” he added.

Speaking about the Indian community in the UAE, Modi said: “We are immensely proud that the rich contribution of our community to building a modern, diverse and vibrant UAE are acknowledged and appreciated by the leadership of the UAE.

“Apart from the Indians whose remittances sustain their families back home in India, we are also witnessing a steady increase in investments into India by some of the top Indian business leaders in the UAE.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the leadership of UAE for looking after the well-being of the Indian diaspora here like a true guardian. I would also like to thank the leadership of UAE for the steps taken recently to provide long-term visas and other benefits to expatriates.”

London, Aug 24 (IANS) The British Airways strike next month is to cause at least five consecutive days of flight cancellations, the airlines said on Saturday. British Airways pilots announced three days of strikes – taking place on September 9, 10 and 27 – in a dispute over wages, the BBC reported.

The British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) said on Friday the strikes were a “last resort” born out of “enormous frustration” with airline management. The pilots have rejected a pay increase worth 11.5 per cent over three years, which the airline put forward in July.

Despite the first strikes being on September 9 and 10, some customers flying between the 8th and 12th have been told their flight has been cancelled and to rebook or get a refund.

“We are doing absolutely everything we can to prevent this unfair action from taking place and ruining our customers’ travel plans.

“Airlines have a very complex operation and during times of widespread disruption, there can be knock-on effects onto flights on other days,” the UK flag carrier said in a statement.

Customers have reported receiving emails late Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday morning informing them their flight had been cancelled.
Many have taken to social media to complain that they have been unable to rebook via the website or get through on the airlines’ phone lines.

According to the airline, it carries 145,000 customers every day, with a fleet of more than 280 aircraft.

Hong Kong, Aug 24 (IANS) More than 1,000 people gathered on top of Hong Kong’s Lion Rock to shine lights across the city in solidarity with the city which has been rocked by anti-government protests for almost three months.

On Friday, an estimated 210,000 peopled made a human chain across Hong Kong in the latest anti-government protest, whilst the outdoor community emulated the scenes on top of Lion Rock.
“This is not a protest,” one of the Lion Rock gathering organisers told the South China Morning Post.
“A lot of people put effort into the Hong Kong Way. We thought a lot of trail runners and nature lovers wanted to support the event but not go to the Hong Kong Way itself.”

Hong Kong has been gripped by almost three months of anti-government protests, which began with opposition to the extradition deal that would have seen fugitives deported to other jurisdictions, including mainland China.

“Although the current situation in Hong Kong looks dark, we hope to bring light with the message of hope, peace and love on the symbolic Lion Rock,” the organiser said.

Muzaffarabad, Aug 24 (IANS) More than four hundred journalists from different parts of Pakistan have arrived here to take part in a “symbolic march” towards the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday.

The march organised by the Central Union of Journalists (CUJ), a regional body, was for the ongoing Kashmir issue that arose after the Indian government scrapped Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and also divided the state into two Union Territories.

The rally will leave Muzaffarabad on Saturday morning for Chakothi, 58 km from Muzaffarabad.
“What has compounded our worries is the unparalleled communication blockade that has sealed all sources of information,” said Abdul Hakim Kashmiri, an office-bearer of the CUJ.

“This situation compelled us to do something to draw the attention of the world community in general, and media fraternity in particular,” he told Dawn news.

London, Aug 24 (IANS) UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that his country would not “retreat” from the international community as it leaves the European Union (EU), the media reported on Saturday.
He made the remarks on Friday ahead of this weekend’s G7 Summit in Biarritz, France, his first international meeting as a Prime Minister, the BBC reported.

The Summit, a get together of most of the leaders of the world’s largest economies, comes with just over two months until the UK is scheduled to leave the EU on October 31.

In his remarks, he insisted that the UK would be an “energetic partner” on the world stage after Brexit.
“Some people question the democratic decision this country has made, fearing that we will retreat from the world. Some think Britain’s best days are behind us.

“To those people I say: you are gravely mistaken.” His comments come after French President Emmanuel Macron suggested a post-Brexit trade deal with the US could see Britain as a “junior partner” in a position of “historic vassalisation”.

US President Donald Trump, who has consistently praised Johnson, has predicted a speedy US-UK trade deal after Brexit, the BBC reported.

But the British side is adamant that it wants to secure the right deal rather than a quick agreement.
A UK government spokesman said on Friday: “Of course we want to move quickly, but we want to get the right deal that works for both sides.”

A Downing Street spokesman said Johnson and Trump “looked forward to speaking further” during their one-on-one talks on the sidelines of the summit on Sunday morning.
Also on Sunday, Johnson will meet European Council President Donald Tusk, who earlier this week refused the former’s proposal to scrap the backstop plan for the Irish border.

By Arul LouisUnited Nations, Aug 24 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hopes that under the current situation in Kashmir, negotiations by UN human rights officials for access to the area “can move forward”, according to his Associate Spokesperson Eri Kaneko.

“We are aware that our human rights contacts are in touch at various levels with the Indian government. So we will hope that these contacts will continue to allow for access,” Kaneko said at her briefing on Friday,

She was answering a reporter’s question if there were efforts to “force” India to agree to the request made by UN Human Rights High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet to allow a “humanitarian team” to visit Kashmir.

“We hope that in the light of the current situation of these negotiations can move forward to allow for access,” Kaneko said.

Former High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein had called for an international inquiry into the human rights situation in Kashmir and for his office’s access to both sides of the Line of Control. It has been reiterated by Bachelet.

India has refused to allow the High Commissioner’s staff access to Kashmir saying it was an internal matter for the country, which has an independent judiciary and mechanisms to safeguard human rights.
The Secretary-General does not have the authority to force any country to allow in staffers.
On Thursday, a group of UN human rights experts called on the Indian government “to end the crackdown on freedom of expression, access to information and peaceful protests imposed” on Kashmir, according to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The five experts “expressed concern that the measures, imposed after the Indian Parliament revoked the Constitutionally-mandated status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, would exacerbate tensions in the region”, the OHCHR said.

The group included special rapporteurs David Kaye, Michel Forst and Clement Nyaletsossi Voule.

Kabul, Aug 24 (IANS) A former Taliban member has said that an agreement between the US and the militant group would be finalised within the next few days.

Abdul Salam Zaeef, who served as Taliban’s ambassador for Pakistan in the late 1990s, said that the deputy leader of the group, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar will sign the peace agreement with the US, reported TOLO News.

Zaeef said the US negotiators wanted to mention in the agreement that the Taliban will not have any relations with terrorist groups after the peace agreement. The ninth round of the negotiations began in Doha on Thursday.

Zaeef said the US and the Taliban have agreed on a full withdrawal of foreign forces in 15 to 24 months and on counterterrorism assurances. “It will be in contravention of the agreement if the US forces remain in the country after a peace deal,” Zaeef said, referring to reports about a possible presence of the US intelligence in Afghanistan even after it pulls all American troops by 2020.

According to the former ambassador, China, Russia and Pakistan will be the guarantors of the agreement from the Taliban side, reports TOLO News.

Zaeef said that the intra-Afghan negotiations will begin a week after the US-Taliban peace agreement.
He, however, did not reject the existence of rift within the Afghan groups. “The future of Afghanistan will be discussed in the intra-Afghan negotiations,” Zaeef said.

This comes as the Afghan government has said that the list of the peace negotiating team was ready and that it will be announced after an agreement between the US and the Taliban.

Johnson and Trump “looked forward to speaking further” at the summit, it added. This will be the first time Johnson will meet Trump after becoming Prime Minister. Trump has consistently praised Johnson, and predicted a speedy US-UK trade deal after Brexit.

The Summit, which also comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US, runs from Saturday to Monday. Issues on the agenda include the global economy, tackling inequality and responding to the challenges of the digital age and the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
