By Arundhuti BanerjeeMumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) : Bollywood actor Amit Sadh, who has recently seen in the digital film “Barot House”, dismissed rumours that he has been cast in the biopic of mathematician Shakuntala Devi.

“I am not a part of the Shakuntala Devi biopic. Someone has put out wrong information without asking me. I did not talk about it because no one asked me. Now that I am asked, I am clearing it,” Amit told IANS.

He also had to pull out of Bejoy Nambiar’s film “Taish” owing to injury.

“I had to leave Bijoy’s film because of the back injury. Bijoy is kind enough to understand my situation. He told me health should be prioritised over a film. Having said that, I am looking forward to work with Bejoy in future,” said Amit.

In “Barot House”, released on the OTT platform ZEE5, Amit has a starring role. Amit says he decided to do the film at the last minute.

“I was supposed to do a different film with Bugs (Bhargava, the director of the film) that got pushed. I had free dates in June and July, and he shared the story with me. I felt the story was mindblowing — of course, the particular role was challenging but the thrill lay in the story. As an actor, we want new challenges, and ‘Barot House’ has given me that. I am always interested to move out of my comfort zone so that I can grow,” said Amit.

The film also features Manjari Fadnis, Aaryan Menghji, Aseem Hattangadi, Farida Patel Venkat.
Starting his career in Bollywood with “Phoonk 2” in 2010, Amit has acted in films like “Kai Po Che”,

“Sultan”, “Sarkar 3”, “Raag Desh”, “Gold” and “Super 30”.

He was particularly applauded for his acting in the web series, “Breathe”.

“The web series as a genre has come as a blessing. I am getting good opportunities as an actor. I firmly believe that one should keep working even in tough times. Sticking around hard work always paid off,” he said.

Amit made his mark on TV shows such as “Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr” and “Kohinoor”, and he also appeared on realisty shows as “Bigg Boss” and “Nach Baliye”.

“Earlier, I would be acting on the basis of what I was offered. There was a limitation to show my talent. I am an outsider of the industry so I have to work to pay my bills. Now, with the changing time, I am able to choose the best. Scripts such as “Gold”, “Sultan”, and “Breathe” have started coming on my way,” shared the actor.

He added that constant good words from critics and fans alike helped him to stay motivated.

“We all want to be a part of good films but till the time that happens, I have to survive. Earlier, I was doing that io stay in business, but thankfully I have good support from my fans and critics, who always said good things about my performance. Now, things have changed for me,” said Amit.

Mumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) : A mischievous comment actress Deepika Padukone posted in a chat session conducted by her husband and actor Ranveer Singh on his Instagram page, briefly threw fans of the star couple in a tizzy, with many of them speculating if the actress is pregnant.

“Hi Daddie,” wrote Deepika, after joining Ranveer’s Insta session. She posted the comment with a waving emoji, a baby emoji and heart emoji.

Ranveer responded, saying: “Hi Baby”.

Things got more interesting when actor Arjun Kapoor wrote: “Baba Bhabi is gonna give you one.” Many construed Arjun’s comment as evidence that Deepika and Ranveer were on way to having a child.

Fans started decoding Deepika’s comment, speculating if she was hinting at her pregnancy. There had been pregnancy rumours about Deepika after her appearance at Cannes film festival earlier this year, too.

The session, which Ranveer conducted on Instagram, is no longer visible on his page.

Earlier this year, the actress discussed motherhood in an interview to an international media portal. “It will happen when it has to happen. Motherhood trumps being married. That’s what I hear from people who have had children. Of course, it will happen at some point,” she had said.

Deepika and Ranveer tied the knot in Italy last year.

By Arundhuti BanerjeeMumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) : Their choices clearly show both actor John Abraham and filmmaker Nikkhil Advani have a keen interest in being a part of stories that revolve around national interest and real-life events. The duo’s latest collaboration “Batla House” has again started a conversation along those lines among the common people, and they firmly state their brand of patriotism is different from the ‘nationalist attitude.

“There is a strong line seperating patriotism from jingoism. In our opinion, a patriot is one who celebrates the positive things of the country but at the same time is critical about things that need to be changed. A jingoist on the other hand is one who is blinded by the thought of nationalism and feel proud of everything — the good as well as the bad — and is not critical even about the negative things. As filmmakers and storytellers, we are patriots and our opinion reflects on our cinema,” Nikkhil told IANS.

John agreed with Nikkhil. “He (Nikkhil) is absolutely right. (This is) One of the reasons why, over the past five years, filmmakers are making films on stories that have something to do with our national pride, our achievements and our story. Today’s youth is proud to be an Indian,” he said, adding: “There are those who are blinded aby everything we do, and that is called nationalism. A patriot is slightly different. He has a critical opinion on things that require a change to build a better society,” the actor explained.
Nikkhil has been associated with films such as “D-Day”, “Airlift” and the TV show “P.O.W. – Bandi Yuddh Ke”, which are centred on patriotism and love for the nation, while John has touched upon the subject in films such as “Madras Café”, “Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran”, “Satyameva Jayate”, and “Romeo Akbar Walter” before “Batla House”.

“Batla House” director Nikkhil added: “What resonates when it comes to patriotism can also express an opinion on animal welfare, on the costal road, on mob lynching and on sexual harassment — things that are wrong and should be pointed out loud and clear. That is what differentiates between a patriot and a jingoist.”

Did they get a chance to read the reviews or get any sort of feedback on the film?

“I did not get a chance to read all the reviews because I have been busy pushing the film to the theatre and the extra effort that our team has to put after the decision came from the Delhi High Court to change a few things,” replied Nikkhil.

Justice Vibhu Bakhru of the Delhi High Court on Tuesday had disposed of an objection plea to certain scenes after the makers of “Batla House” agreed to make changes in the disclaimer and modify or delete scenes that the petitioners found objectionable. The plea, filed by Ariz Khan and Shehzad Ahmad — accused in the Batla House encounter case — is likely to come up for hearing next week.

According to Nikkhil, although the film released on August 15, they could not open in around 100 centres and that has affected a day’s collection.

“Missing out on the business of a holiday is definitely a chunk of money but we will hopefully cover it over the weekend. We could have got a better opening but there is no point of complaining. Word-of-mouth reactions are helping us now.”

Added John: “We had an opening-day target of Rs 18 crore but we managed Rs 14.59 crore rupees. It is not a bad number, but we had a bigger target. However, a story likes this is worth telling and people should experience the film.”

In “Batla House”, John plays ACP Sanjay Kumar Yadav.

Sharing his experience of delivering an intense performance, John said: “I was playing the very interesting character, who was a decorated police officer, and then suddenly he is called a murderer after the encounter. He went through a lot of psychological stress and his personal life is affected since his wife wants to a divorce. I enjoyed playing the layered character.”

“I think John understood the script at a level that, in many scenes, he performed it better than I had imagined it. That is how we took the story to a note higher,” smiled Nikkhil.

Mumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) : “Chidiakhana” director Manish Tiwary is upset that he is caught up in battle with the censor board over the certification of his children’s film.

He says the movie narrates an inspirational story of an underdog surviving all odds, but is disappointed that they are caught running around in circles to get the certification sorted.

It all started when Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) refused to give the children’s film a ‘U/A’ certificate on the grounds that it depicts violence and discrimination that could disturb children. The Bombay High Court, while hearing a petition filed by Children’s Film Society, said that CBFC is a

“certification body and not a censor board”, and it didn’t have the “intellectual morality and authority to decide what one wants to watch”.

“The rigmaroles of ‘Chidiakhana’ mirrors the predicament faced by underdogs anywhere and everywhere in the world. The film’s protagonist Sooraj is a football-loving and football-playing teenager who comes to Mumbai to pursue his one passion but instead finds himself swept into the maelstrom of regional conflicts that drags him away from his love for the game. The narrative focus is his game; the so-called violent scenes are necessary contextual embellishments that are done with taste, humour and with children in mind,” Tiwary said.

Tiwary says he knew his first film “Dil Dosti Etc” was meant for an adult audience and he had applied for an ‘A’ certification. His second film “Issaq” received a U/A certification without cuts.

“But ‘Chidiakhana’ is meant for children. I had my own children in mind while writing and directing the film. We have made a film that has an inspirational story of an underdog surviving the odds and winning something valuable for an entire community. But instead, of the film seeing the light of the day, we are caught running around in circles to get our certification sorted,” added Tiwary.

Opening up on the CBFC’s call, Tiwary said: “I have pointedly criticised the opaque processes of the board time and again, and have refused to making cuts in exchange of a ‘U’ certificate but also a much diluted and artistically compromised film. The censor board works with its own peculiar whims and movie-makers suffer at their hands. It’s high time that artists have a clear understanding of their freedom of expression.”

Yashodeep R Deshmukh, counsel of “Chidiakhana”, said: “Once you have seen the film in its entirety, keeping in mind the theme, context and the treatment given, particularly to the scenes the CBFC has objected to, the only inference you will draw is that it’s a ‘U’ certificate film.”

He also stated that “while a ‘U’ certificate would endorse the film as suitable for all age groups, a ‘U/A’ certificate would attest that the parents of children below 12 years must use caution while permitting their children to watch these film. Hence, a ‘U/A’ certification would defeat the entire purpose of releasing the film”.
The final hearing will be held on August 23.

Mumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) : Producer Ekta Kapoor, whose web series “Haq Se” was set in Jammu and Kashmir, feels the Government’s decision to scrap Article 370 in that state is welcome, because there should be a ‘one country one law’ policy for all of India.

“I look at this way — as I am living in this country and I feel we should adopt the ‘one country one law’ policy,” Ekta said, when asked for her view on the scrapping of article 370.

Ekta was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of two forthcoming web series — “Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala” and “M.O.M: Mission Over Mars”, on Saturday in Mumbai.

Her web series “Haq Se” starred Rajeev Khandelwal, Surveen Chawla and Parul Gulati, and revolved around four blood-bound sisters with four passionate dreams. The modernday story of dreams, desires, love, war and the eternal pursuit of happiness is set against the breathtaking beackdrop and the unsettling unrest of Kashmir.

“Haq Se” raised issues such as justice, equality and women empowerment in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ekta was asked if she is will produce another season of the show. “We are doing a second season, and in the second season we will raise more issues,” she replied.

Would she highlight the abrogation of Article 370 in the new season of “Haq Se”?

“We have already completed writing the second season and we are going to start shooting soon. So, I cannot be bringing in the issue but we plan to make a small insertion (on the subject) in the script,” she replied.

There were reports that Ekta Kapoor and actress Divyanka Tripathi weren’t on good terms with each other while working on “Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala”. Ekta retorted, when the topic was raised: “I hear a thousand such stories every day. I feel people shouldn’t listen to everything. All of you (the media) saw us on stage so, do I need to answer anything about it?”

“Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala” brings TV heartthrobs Rajeev Khandelwal and Divyanka Tripathi together for the first time. They play chefs in the show, produced by AltBalaji, the digital streaming platform of Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms.

Mumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) “Mardaani” actor Tahir Raj Bhasin had moved to the IIT-Bombay and stayed with students before the commencement of the shooting for “Chhichhore”. He says he internalises every role that he takes up.

Tahir will be seen playing a sports champion in the film by director Nitesh Tiwari, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B). “Chhichhore” is inspired from the director’s life and times at the engineering college.

Tahir said: “I moved to IIT-Bombay to spend a week at the hostel before the filming began. I internalise every role that I do and my creative process sees me immerse myself with the setting and the character that I have at hand.

“I worked out at the same gym as the students and ate in their canteens to get a feel of their campus life. I studied the young students closely and observed the dynamics between hostels. Moving to the campus made me ready to play the role of an engineering college student.”

Mumbai, Aug 16 (IANS) “Mission Mangal” has opened to good numbers at the box-office, and the film’s debutant director Jagan Shakti is garnering praise. The filmmaker says the skill and professionalism of his multistar-case, headed by superstar Akshay Kumar, is the reason he never felt stress on the set.

“When Akshay Kumar is on board for a mission — especially for a big project as this — there is no room for stress. There is only hard work and happiness because he has such a great sense of humour and commerce to make a film work. In fact, every actor of the project gave their full commitment so I had no worries while handling such a big star cast,” Jagan told IANS.

“Since the story emerged from a conviction, as a film director I only focused on delivering the best. The cast did not treat me as a newcomer and I also worked like a regular filmmaker,” he added.

Akshay stars in “Mission Mangal” along with Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Sharman Joshi and HG Dattatreya, and with a subject like ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission of 2013, Jagan said he had everything a debutant filmmaker in Bollywood could look for.

Recalling how he was inspired to make ths film, Jagan said: “After the success of the Mangalyan project in 2013, I saw a picture of the group of female scientists who made the mission a success in the newspaper. I felt guilty. My sister is a scientist and she has been a part of many such research works but I never looked at her as the extraordinary person she is. She balances her house and her career with such efficiency, and there are so many women out there doing the same silently. The idea (to make the film) came from there.”

The story of “Mission Mangal” is based on Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Mars Orbiter Mission, which was execute by a primarily all-women team of scientists in 2013. Every character in the film hails from a middle-class background and went on to create history.

“If we look at some of the biggest achievers in the world — achievers as Sachin Tendulkar or late scientist APJ Abdul Kalam — they were mostly common people whose work and talent made them extraordinary. So, I believe it is efficiency that sets an individual apart from the crowd. We all face difficulties when we dream big, but a person becomes an achiever when he or she does not give up in a tough situation. My film encapsulates all these thoughts and tries to encourage people to excel,” shard the film director, who has earlier worked as an assistant director in films such as “Padman”, “Holiday”, “Dear Zindagi”, “Ki & Ka” and “Shamitabh”.
