Kharagpur/Kolkata, Sep 18 (IANS) Researchers from IIT Kharagpur have developed a unique approach of generating electricity from clothes drying in natural ambience, which is otherwise a part and parcel of daily life, according to the premier institute.

The researchers have utilised tiny channels, so-called nanochannels, in the cellulose-based fabric network traditionally woven, to generate electrical power through guided movement of saline water amidst continuous evaporation.

The process is very much analogous to water transport across the parts of a living plant.
“The regular cellulose-based wearable textile, in this case, acts as a medium for the motion of salt ions through the interlace fibrous nano-scale network by capillary action, inducing an electric potential in the process”, explained Mechanical Engineering Department professor and the project’s lead researcher Suman Chakraborty.

The researchers demonstrated up-scaling of the entire process by using a large number of (around 50 in number, with the surface area of 3,000 square meters) clothes being dried in tandem by washermen in a remote village. The researchers were able to reliably charge up to around 10 Volt in almost 24 hours. This stored energy is enough to glow a white LED for more than 1 hour.

The frugal innovation demonstrates that ordinary cellulose-based wet textile, commonly dried in natural atmosphere, might be capable enough to serve the underprivileged community at large in terms of addressing the essential power requirements in remote areas.

As compared to existing methods of energy harvesting from complex resources, the electricity generation occurs in the natural ambience. Further, in contrast to artificially engineered power generation devices needing external pumping resources, here the intrinsic surface energy of the fabric is used to drive the current.

In a hot and dry environment, the natural evaporation gets spontaneously enhanced, so that the flow-induced electrical potential can be maximized. The device, thus, might turn out to be extremely effective in geographically warm and dry regions of the earth.

Further, the electricity generation might be up-scaled massively by systematically drying a set of regular wearable garments under the sun-light. This eventually culminates into a utilitarian paradigm of low-cost power harvesting in extreme rural settings, explained Chakraborty.

Mumbai, Sep 6 (IANS) The Dhirubhai Ambani International School (DAIS) is the only Indian school to rank among the Top 10 International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools of the Education Advisers Ltd. UK, an official said here on Friday.

The DAIS, situated in Bandra Kurla Complex, stands at the 10th position in the ‘Global Top 50 IB Schools 2019′ list, with the rankings based on the Average IB Diploma Score this year. In the 2019 IB Diploma Class 12 exams, DAIS students achieved the average score of 39.5 against the maximum possible score of 45 points. This comes to No.1 in India and South Asia, Top 6 in Asia and Top 10 in the world.

Many of the listed schools have a rich legacy, some over a century old with a good track record.
However, DAIS was established in 2003 and after its first batch of IB Diploma students graduated in 2007, it has consistently achieved outstanding results in the IB Diploma exams.

“This recognition exemplifies our school’s culture of excellence and is truly a testament to our students’ talent and hard work, and our teachers’ steadfast commitment,” said DAIS Founder-Chairperson Nita M. Ambani.

Managing Director of Education Advisers Ltd., Les Webb, said in recent years the IB table has been dominated by famous private UK schools, but now several prominent Asian schools, particularly from Singapore and Hong Kong, are overtaking the UK schools in the Top 10 category.

“It is great to see DAIS become the first Indian school breaking into this Top 10 and we are very happy to welcome it to our Global Top 50 League Tables,” said Webb. He pointed out that top academic scores are not the only route to pick a school for a child, the fact that 70 per cent of parents head straight for the League Tables indicates that academic success is indeed an important factor.

The IB Diploma Programme, offered at DAIS and 5,139 schools in 156 countries, is a widely admired pre-university preparatory programme that is respected by leading universities across the globe.

Np News 24 Nashville: JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books have been banned by the administration in a catholic school in Nashville, Tennessee as a pastor said that the curses and spells mentioned in JK Rowling’s book about the wizarding world  may lead to ‘conjuring evil spirits’ when read by a human being.

According to local news outlet ‘The Tennessean’, the pastor at St Edward Catholic School sent an email to the parents of the student informing them that he had contacted exorcists who advised the school to remove the books.

“These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception,” Reverend Dan Reehil wrote in his email. “The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text,” the email further read.

The ‘Harry Potter’ series was published between 1997 and 2007. The series has have sold over 450 million copies worldwide, distributed in more than 200 territories and translated into 79 languages, and have been turned into eight films.

Guwahati, Sep 3 (IANS) In a bid to promote learning through Artificial Intelligence (AI), a team of postgraduate students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, along with their faculty members are developing an Artificial Intelligence-enabled chatbot named “ALBELA” to teach and support first year students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE).

“We have been working on its development since last 7 months with a team of dedicated 7 research scholars of the department. Earlier we did the trial runs of the chatbot, and started using from this academic session onwards.

“The response from the students has been overwhelming and we hope that this will become the new normal in near future. Prof. Rohit Sinha, Head EEE Department, and the team IBM have extended their continuous support for this activity,” Praveen Kumar, Professor, Department of EEE, IIT Guwahati, said in a statement.

The chatbot would help students find their class schedule, tutorial schedule, and examination queries via a AI-based chat window. Students at times may hesitate to approach an instructor regarding their queries, but with this chat-based system students can clear their doubts, both technical and non-technical, according to the institution.

“The team is developing the analytical problem solving skill. It will be helpful for the students to learn how to solve analytical problems related to the course. Within next one year, we will extend it to biomedical signal processing, electrical machine courses, said Samarendra Dandapat, Professor, Department of EEE at IIT Guwahati.

Np News 24 Mumbai: A third of the school children in Maharashtra suffer from diabetes or hypertension, primarily because of the food they consume from their school canteens according to a State study, a top official said.

The study involved 20 schools.  “The study has blamed the higher incidence of such life-style diseases to the food served in the school canteens,” Pallavi Darade, Commissioner for State Food and Drug Apdministration, said speaking at an event organised by industry lobby CII.

“We were shocked to find that as much as 30 percent of the schoool students in the state are suffering from diabetes or hypertension, and we identified that the food served in their school canteens is the main culprit,” the CII said quoting Darade.

The statement did not disclose the age of the kids or name the schools/cities covered, but said in the case of adolescent kids, ever a third or the fourth child is obese. The study, carried out to find out how the kids are doing on the health front, was launched on the World Food Day, which is observed on October 16 every year, CII said.

She said that a new diet scheme launched following the discovery is likely to be extended to 600 schools having their own canteens across the state.

Meanwhile, Darade reiterated that the State will soon ask hotel and restaurants to specify the calorie count of each food item along with the price on the menu.  “The move is aimed at controlling lifestyle diseases,” she added.

“We are planning to ask hotels and restaurants to mention the calorie count of the food they serve to enable consumers take an informed decision while choosing the food, and not ending up with diabetes or hypertension,” she said.

She explained that high fat, salt and sugar food has direct relation to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and to cardiovascular/heart diseases and hence, regulating intake of such items is essential.
She said that the policy is ‘under consideration’ of the government, adding it will start with five-star hotels and other restaurants which have the capability to declare such aspects.
The industry lobby also launched a report on frozen foods at the event.

Lucknow, Aug 27 (IANS) Students in government primary schools will now begin their day with yoga classes. Basic Education Minister Satish Dwiwedi has directed officials to implement the yoga schedule with immediate effect.

The Minister has told officials to ensure that the 1.5 crore students in the government primary schools participate in a 15-minute yoga session during the morning assembly. Also, children should attend a 15-minute PT class before the school ends.

Following the recent controversy over students at a primary school in Mirzapur being served ‘roti-salt’ as midday meal, Dwiwedi has directed officials to constitute flying squads in all the divisions to monitor distribution of the midday meal, books, socks and shoes, school bag, and uniforms.
He also sought an action plan till 2022 and a third-party social audit on the primary and upper primary schools.

Meanwhile, another video has emerged of children in a government school being served the midday meal on banana leaves. It was said that Muslim children were asked to eat on leaves, but a probe has revealed that the video is three-week old and of the two children seen eating on banana leaves, one is a Muslim and the other a Hindu.

Official sources said that the children had forgotten to bring their plates, and that the children themselves offered to eat on the banana leaves.

Sonipat (Haryana), Aug 26 (IANS) Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas for the pursuit of peace through the practice of truth, non-violence, compassion and kindness were once again underscored during the ‘World Youth Conference on Kindness’ at the O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) here.

The Conference brought together many young leaders and experts from around the world to draw from Gandhi’s ideas of non-violence to transform their societies towards sustainable peace. As an institutional partner for the conference, JGU hosted over 100 youth leaders from across the world for three days for an international workshop.

In his opening remarks, the varsity’s Founding Vice Chancellor, Professor C. Raj Kumar, articulated the importance of Gandhi’s ideas of peace, kindness, truth, and non-violence as the revolutionary anchors needed for transforming societies towards sustainable peace.

“Gandhi is an undying reminder of how one person can inspire a community, a nation, and the world. His learnings need to be built into our education systems and exemplified in our daily lives, if real societal change is to be achieved,” he noted.

Professor Kumar also drew an interesting comparison of kindness with the concept of ‘Ubuntu’, a traditional African philosophy that preaches “I am what I am because of who we all are”. Signifying that there exists a common bond between all of us as humanity, he said that “it is through this bond, through our interaction with our fellow human beings, that we discover our own human qualities. The philosophy of Ubuntu is the only hope for humanity”.

“We only affirm our humanity when we acknowledge that of others. It is the quality of Ubuntu which gives people resilience, and enables them to survive and emerge as stronger human beings despite all efforts to dehumanize them. Gandhi knew it and was always conscious of it. The concept of Ubuntu epitomizes the theme of today’s conference on kindness,” he said.

He said that despite a sense of helplessness and at times, even hopelessness, it is in moments of despair that one needs to be reminded of the prophetic words of Nelson Mandela who said: “I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair, as that way lay defeat and death.”
The Vice Chancellor was optimistic and expressed faith in the younger generation to be able to confront the large set of dehumanizing values and see the kindness in everything around.

Kanpur, Aug 22 (IANS) The IIT-Kanpur has developed a new type of horseshoe that will have a longer life and save the horses from the excruciating pain they have to undergo while changing them.
The horseshoe that the animal wears gets roughed out within a week, but the owners continue with it for months which adds to the animal’s discomfort.

The new horseshoe is supposed to last, at least, for a month. Rita Singh, convener, Rural Technology Action Group, IIT, said an iron rod — that is used in house building — is used to make the horseshoe which has less carbon and thus comes off easily. “In fact, this horseshoe will automatically fall off after a specified period of time,” she said.
