Assam All Set to Welcome PM Modi, Kokrajhar will Shine with Diyas

Dispur : npnews24 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kokrajhar in Assam on Friday where he will attend an event to celebrate the signing of the Bodo Accord. This will be the Prime Minister’s first Northeast tour since the protests against the Revised Citizenship Act (CAA) began in December.

He tweeted, “Tomorrow I am looking forward to the tour in Assam.  I will be in Kokrajhar to address a public meeting.  We will celebrate the successful signing of the Bodo Agreement which will end decades of problems. It will mark the beginning of a new era of peace and progress.”

The Bodo Accord was signed by the government on 27 January with four factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), All Bodo Students Union and a civil society group. It aims to bring long-term peace in Bodo-dominated areas of Assam.

In a recent tweet, the Prime Minister described the signing day as “a very special day in India” and said it would bring transformative results for the Bodos. In the two days after the signing of the agreement, more than 1615 members of various factions of the NDFB had handed over their weapons and joined the mainstream.

Bodo is the largest tribal community in Assam, which constitutes about 6 percent of the total population of the state. The Bodo tribals have control on a large part of Assam for a long time. The Bodo Territorial Area District has been formed by joining the four districts of Assam, Kokrajhar, Baksa, Udalguri and Chirang. The Bodo community demanded a separate Bodoland in the year 1966.

This is the Agreement

A senior official said that the agreement will provide economic package with political authority to Bodo tribals of Assam. The territorial integrity of Assam will be maintained. Another official said the agreement was done within the framework of the constitution without division of the state. The Home Minister was very keen on finalizing the agreement as soon as possible to end the Bodo insurgency in Assam.
