Accused dies by suicide in Vishrambaug police station lock up

PUNE: An accused who had been arrested for a robbery, died by suicide in the Vishrambaug police station. The deceased has been identified as Shivaji Uttam Garad and the incident came to light at 6 am on Wednesday.

Garad had been arrested by Unit 6 of the Crime Branch on May 12 for stealing a vehicle. He had been kept in the police custody at the Vishrambaug police station after conducting a probe on Tuesday night. The accused prepared a long rope by using the blanket given to him. He went to the toilet in the morning. He hanged himself to the grill and died by suicide.

CCTV cameras have been installed in the main passage and inside the Vishrambaug police custody. However, there are no cameras in the bathroom. If an accused dies in police custody, the probe is conducted by the Maharashtra State Crime Investigation Department. Accordingly, the CID has been informed.

In such incidents, the post-mortem of the accused’s body is carried out in the presence of the tehsildar and video shooting is done. The post-mortem is carried out accordingly.
