Aaditya Singh Rajput | Big blaze at a godown in Timber Market; big tragedy averted by removing 10 gas cylinders

Pune : Aaditya Singh Rajput | A warehouse in Timber Market caught fire, in which four adjoining houses and some classrooms of a school were also gutted. The fire broke out at around 4 am and could not be controlled till 9 am.

 

Many timber godowns are adjacent to each other in Timber Market in Bhavani Peth. One of the godowns caught fire at around 4 am. The fire brigade was alerted at 4.14 am. Fire engines were rushed from the central fire station in Bhavani Peth and from other city areas. Fire officer Devendra Potphode, 30 officials, 100 jawans, 18 fire engines of the Pune Cantonment Board and PMRDA were trying to douse the blaze. They started pouring water from all sides to check the inferno from spreading to nearby congested settlements and a school. As many as 10 gas cylinder were removed from the spot. This averted a major tragedy.

 

Wooden furniture and timber in eight godowns was reduced to ashes. Eight classrooms and the teachers’ common room of the school were also affected. Firefighters were continuously spreading water to bring the blaze under control.

 

However, wooden material was catching fire again and again. Valuables amounting to crores of rupees were damaged in the fire. However, no casualty was reported. The reason behind the blaze could not be ascertained.
