An old man was sentenced to starve to death in prison. This old man had a daughter who requested the ruler to meet his sentenced father daily, which was accepted. During the meeting in jail, the girl was searched intensively so that she could not take any food items for her father. The condition of her old father was getting worse day by day due to hunger. This condition of the father could not be seen by her daughter. She would remain depressed because of her helplessness watching her dying father go near death.

Then one day she did an act which became a matter of sin and virtue for people of two different ideologies. Unable to carry anything due to the restriction, the daughter forced her to start breastfeeding her dying father. Due to which the condition of the father started improving. One day the guards caught it while doing so and presented it to the ruler.

This incident created panic in the society. People split into two groups. One faction considered it to be a condemnable offense with a breach of the sacred relationship, while the other was referring to it as an example of great feeling of love and affection towards the father. The case caught on a lot, but ultimately human values prevailed and both father and daughter were released. Many painters put this incident on canvas, in which this painting of Murillo became very famous.
