77 Prisoners and 26 Staff Members of Arthur Road Jail Tests Corona Positive

Mumbai : Coronavirus infection has been confirmed in 77 prisoners and 26 personnel of Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. Of the 200 samples taken from prison, 103 reported corona positive, while the rest reported negative. Arthur Road jail’s 26 staff members, who have been found to have corona infection, include many officers. State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh confirmed this.

Deshmukh said that 77 jail prisoners and 26 jail staff members have been found positive. At the same time, the Maharashtra Jail Administration said that all the Corona positive prisoners found would be admitted to GT Hospital and St. George’s Hospital on Friday morning while the jail personnel would be admitted separately. The Arthur Road Jail of Mumbai has a capacity of only 800 prisoners whereas at present 2600 prisoners have been kept here.

In this case, the risk of infection spread is very high. Recently, the Bombay High Court had also asked the Maharashtra government about the Corona virus infection in jail. The High Court had asked if there is any prisoner inside the jail who is infected with Coronavirus. It has now come to light that the corona infection has started spreading in the jail too. However, apart from the jail, the corona is spreading rapidly among the policemen here.

So far 531 police personnel including 51 officers have been found infected with COVID-19 in Maharashtra. An official gave this information on Thursday. The official said that out of these infected police personnel, there are 480 constables, who are being treated at various hospitals in the state. He said 39 out of 531 infected police personnel have been recovered, including eight officers.

He said that so far, five policemen have died due to the virus. Meanwhile, a police inspector and five members of his family in Aurangabad city were found infected with COVID-19 on Thursday. The son of the police officer was found infected with COVID-19 on Wednesday and is undergoing treatment in a private hospital.
