1. Why was he named as Rajiv?

Rajiv Gandhi was born 20 August 1944 in Mumbai. When he was 3yr old, India got its Independence and India’s whole responsibility came on Jawaharlal Nehru’s shoulder. Become a prime minister is in the blood of Rajiv Gandhi. In 1966, his mother Indira Gandhi also become prime minister of India. Did you know, Rajiv Gandhi’s name was kept as ‘Rajiv’ because grandmother of Rajiv Kamala Nehru which means goddess Lakshmi and Rajiv means, flower of lotus, which is used to worship goddess Lakshmi. He spends his childhood with his grandparents.

2. Why did Rajiv Gandhi did not complete his degree? 

In 1962 he was admitted in trinity college, Cambridge to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree but he dropped college in 1965 as he could not handle the failures in his examinations.

Then, next year in 1966 he joined Imperial college, London. But again dropped college.

3. Multi-talented Rajiv –

Rajiv Gandhi is a multi-talented personality. He was not interested in politics. He was very passionate about music who liked western, Hindustani classical and modern music and photography was also one of his hobbies.

Among all the mentioned hobbies being a pilot was his biggest obsession. So, he went to Delhi and took training for becoming a pilot from Flying Club and in 1970 as a pilot, he started working in Indian Airlines.

4. Why Rajiv Gandhi came into politics?

Rajiv Gandhi was not interested in politics, but when his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash on 23 June, 1980, he had joined politics and contested elections from his brother’s seat in Amethi. In 1981, Rajiv Gandhi was made the president of the Indian Youth Congress.
