Pooja Chavan Suicide Case: BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar receives threat calls

Pune: BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar has levelled serious allegations against Uddhav Thackeray government for receiving threatening calls.

“After raising my voice in Pooja Chavan’s suspicious suicide case I have been getting threatening phone calls since yesterday. This mob rule has intensified since the Thackeray government came to power. Government-sponsored goons should realize that I am not someone who will get threatened,” Atul Bhatkhalkar tweeted.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the Maharashtra Police should take suo motu action over the alleged suicide of a 22-year-old Pooja Chavan in Pune and questioned whether the police are under some kind of pressure in connection with the case.

Fadnavis had shot off a letter to Director-General of Police Hemant Nagrale along with some purported audio clips pointing to the alleged involvement of MVA minister Sanjay Rathod in the incident.

Pooja Chavan, a TikTok star who hailed from the temple town of Parli Vaijnath in Beed district, and belonged to the nomadic tribal Banjara community died by suicide in Pune’s Hadapsar area in the wee hours of February 8.

CM Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said that an investigation would be carried out into the allegations against Rathod. “We have been hearing about allegations from different quarters. We have taken note of everything and given directions for an investigation into the matter. However, attempts to destroy careers of individuals, which had been made in some past cases, will not be allowed in this case,” Thackeray said, adding that action would be taken as per the law.

The office of Maharashtra Director General of Police has issued directives to Pune city police to conduct an in-depth probe into the sequence of events leading to Pooja Chavan’s death.
