Pune: Garware college BSc student beaten up by university security staff

Pune: Aditya Tangde Patil, a final year BSc student of Garware college was beaten up the security staff of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) at the examination department. The student allegedly tried to video record his conversation with Mahesh Kakade Director of the Board of Examinations of SPPU in his cabin when the security staff was called and the student was taken away by them.
Aditya had appeared for the final year examinations recently conducted by the SPPU. Aditya had answered all papers in the online format. He has obtained good marks in all subjects except one in which he has been given zero marks. Hence, he had complained to the exam department about this error on November 18.
Aditya has taken admission for MSc in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Warangal and needs to submit the marksheet by December 1. However, because of the erroneous marking in one subject, Aditya fears that he would lose his one year. Hence, he was following up with the Pune university exam department officials for the past ten days.
Aditya had gone to the exam department in Pune University on Wednesday (November 25) but he did not receive satisfactory answers from the officials. So, he went to the cabin of Dr Mahesh Kakade. While entering the cabin, Aditya started video recording the conversation. Dr Kakade objected to the mobile video recording and asked the security staff to take Aditya outside.
The security staff then started beating up Aditya and brought him to the ground floor. He was also made to sit on the floor. This entire episode happened from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday evening. Then the security staff put Aditya in a car and dropped him outside the Pune University premises.
On Thursday morning, Aditya and his parents met Dr Nitin Karmalkar, Vice Chancellor and N S Umrani, Pro Vice Chancellor of the Pune University and narrated the entire incident to them. They assured him that he would not suffer any loss due to the delay in revised marksheet.
Dr Kakade told media persons that the work in the exam department is confidential in nature and hence any kind of video recording inside the department is not acceptable. “I had told the security staff to take him downstairs, but I am unaware of him being beaten up by the staff,” Kakade said.
Vaibhav Edke, President of Maharashtra Student Welfare Association demanded that action should be taken against the concerned staff members who have beaten up Aditya.
