Pune: Business partner dies of suicide over alleged harassment from PMC contractor
Pune: A 48-year-old man died of suicide after his partner, a contractor working with the Pune Municipal Corporation, allegedly harassed him over non-payment of profit share. The incident took place on September 30, but came to light only after the deceased man’s wife lodged a complaint with police in this regard.
Police have identified the deceased as Shankar Basavraj Hugar (48). His wife Laxmi Hugar (40) has filed a complaint in this regard at Hadapsar police station. Based on this complaint, police have registered a FIR against the suspect Shantappa Hugar (30).
According to police, Shankar and Shantappa are both relatives. They were business partners and used to work for the Pune Municipal Corporation as contractors. The duo used to apply for PMC tenders and complete the work. Based on the profit earned, they used to share their revenue.
Shankar and Shantappa had recently completed a project of water pipeline and had also acquired another work order of a drainage pipeline for PMC. They had decided to share the profit as usual. However, despite the profit of Rs 14 lakh in the recent work project, Shantappa refused to give Shankar his money.
When Shankar demanded his share, Shantappa abused him and beat him up. Frustrated over this harassment by his business partner, Shankar hanged himself. Shankar’s wife Laxmi has filed a complaint in this regard at the Hadapsar police station. Police have registered a FIR against Shantappa but are yet to arrest anyone in this case. Hadapsar police are probing the case.
